Only one newly-built primary school in whole Estonia was completed by the autumn of 2009. The honour of its designing and building rests on Celander Ehitus together with Ehitusfirma Rand&Tuulberg AS. The work schedule was extremely tight – on the date of signing the contract only 11 months and one week were left until the opening of the school.

Reported on the articled published in the newspaper Postimees on 31.08.2009:
The children of Peetri Village of Rae Rural Municipality in the vicinity of Tallinn will tomorrow enter a brand-new educational institution - Peetri kindergarten / basic school, where education is provided up to form 5 for the time being.

The educational institution to be opened tomorrow has an enrolment of over 100 students, and quoting the new headmistress Luule Niinesalu, only the forms from 1 to 5 are operative now, but in future it is nevertheless planned to educate children for 9 years.

”As we are a completely new school, we do not have enough students yet. At the moment we have two full first-year classes, there are about 20 students in forms 2 and 3 and a few less than 20 students in forms 4 and 5. Altogether there should be over one hundred students”, said Niinesalu.

”As concerns the kindergarten, it is all full and there was a lot of crowding indeed”, added the headmistress.

There are 120 kindergarten places in Peetri kindergarten/ basic school. “The waiting list for kindergarten places in Rae Rural Municipality is very long and we could alleviate the problem to some extent; however, there are still about a couple of hundred children on the waiting list”, Niinesalu said.

There are no distinct fields of specialisation in Peetri kindergarten/basic school. The study of English starts already in the second year, but no specific in-depth study has been envisaged.

”It is very important for the children to have a friendly and caring atmosphere for studying and it is far more important that they learn to evaluate education and studying rather than being superior to or better than anyone else. Therefore no numerical grading is used in the first and second forms”, the headmistress pointed out.

According to the headmistress, students were admitted from Rae Rural Municipality as well as from other municipalities and this will be the practice also in the future. The children of Rae Rural Municipality will be a priority, but it does not mean that children from the immediate surrounding are rejected.

The fresh students will be wearing a uniform to be complemented by a school tie. The uniform was designed by the Estonian designer Tiina Tiitus. The school’s own theme music has been written by composer Timo Steiner.

Quoting the headmistress, there are 13 teachers in the new school today, but in the future there should be about 20-30 teachers.

The construction of the sole newly-built basic school in Estonia in this year lasted for 341 days and cost EEK 98 million, whereas the amount was paid fully by Rae Rural Municipality.

The school features a library and a sports hall along with a stadium covered with artificial turf.
